Giving our students a voice in the school.
At Scoil Naomh Chárthaigh, we believe that education extends far beyond the textbook. We are committed to nurturing confident, responsible, and active citizens, and one of the brightest examples of this commitment is our Student Council.
Composed of elected representatives from our classes, the Student Council serves as the official voice of the student body, ensuring that our pupils play an active role in shaping their school experience.
Every year we run student council election at the beginning of the year. This allows the students to learn about how democracy works. The children create election posters and are allowed to canvas for school votes. Once students are elected, they meet throughout the year, these meetings are facilitated by a member of staff.
Student council members meet to discuss ways we can improve our school and their suggestions are then brought forward to the staff and school management.
Why Do We Have a Student Council?
The primary purpose of our Student Council is to provide a structured, meaningful opportunity for students to voice their opinions, share their ideas, and collaborate with staff on school initiatives.
We believe that when students are given ownership of their school environment, they develop a deeper sense of belonging and community. The council bridges the gap between the student body and school leadership, creating a partnership where everyone works together to make Scoil Naomh Chárthaigh the best place it can be.
Why Is It Important?
The Student Council benefits our entire school community in several key ways:
Developing Leadership & Life Skills: Serving on the council teaches our pupils invaluable skills such as teamwork, public speaking, negotiation, organisation, and problem-solving.
Promoting Active Citizenship: By participating in democratic elections and meetings, students learn first-hand how democracy works and understand the value of contributing positively to society.
Fostering Inclusivity: The council ensures that every child's perspective is considered. Representatives gather feedback from their classmates, meaning every student has a direct line to positive change.
Driving Fun and Meaningful Initiatives: From planning events and fundraising, to organising active events like our recent sports days and school trips the Student Council brings vibrant, student-led ideas to life.
